I recently bought a DVD recorder. My first attempt to burn a disk just ground to a halt in the middle for no obvious reason. That's not unusual - I think everyone has burnt their share of coasters. Attempting to perform an operation with real-time requirements on an OS that was never built to support real-time work is always going to result in the odd failure.
However, what I wasn't prepared for was what happened when I decided to make sure I didn't mistake the duff disk for a real disk.
I just bent the thing in half as a good way of marking it out as duff. And moments later I was covered in shiny blue confetti, and listening to the tinkling sound of many shards of sharp plastic settling around me, stinging slightly where a couple had hit me in the face. Fortunately, none of this high-velocity debris hit me in the eye.
I had no idea these things shattered so spectacularly. I won't be doing that again without putting safety goggles on first!
